Advanced Pharmacology at the Edge of Care: Precision, Pragmatism, and Palliative Reality

This workshop offers participants a self-guided learning material alongside a 6-hour live virtual an in-depth exploration of CAMP (Complementary and Alternative Pharmaceuticals), end of life pharmacological treatment, patient substance abuse, and a perspective on the dynamic use of buprenorphine in hospice and palliative care. With over 5 hours of accredited learning, this course is specifically designed for advanced clinicians and those professionals with prescribing privileges with the goal of providing an enhanced understanding of drug therapy principles and their clinical applications.

Target Audience

This course is specifically designed for advanced clinicians and professionals with prescribing privileges, but we encourage all interdisciplinary HPM care professionals to attend, including:

  • Physicians
  • Advanced Practice Providers
  • Nurses
  • Pharmacists
  • Other clinicians responsible for symptom management in seriously ill patients.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Apply complex pharmacologic principles to make informed prescribing decisions for patients with serious illness, including drug selection, dosing and delivery.
  2. Evaluate and adjust maintenance medication regimens at end of life based on prognosis, symptom burden, and patient goals to optimize safety and effectiveness.
  3. Identify strategies to balance pain control with management of addiction in patients with advanced illness.
  4. Develop a practical approach to initiating, rotating to, and managing buprenorphine for analgesia in palliative care populations, including patients with multimorbidity, renal impairment, prior to full-agonist exposure, and concurrent opioid use disorder.
