Communications Micro-Learning Flight: Keeping the Connection: Addressing Challenges in Communicating Behind the Masks

Join Rachelle Bernacki, MD MS FAAHPM AGSF, Miguel Paniagua, MD and Stephanie Kiser, MD MPH in this Communications Micro-Learning Flight consisting of three 15-minute micro-learning sessions envisioned to address the pandemic challenges in delivering one of our most vital medical interventions: communication. This activity is designed to share novel skills we have put into practice for communicating "behind the masks", as well as reinforce existing communication principles which are now increasingly vital to providers throughout the healthcare system.

Learning Outcomes

Desired learning outcomes: Through Incorporation of “behind the masks” verbal and non-verbal communication techniques, learners will adapt communication practices to express empathy and build rapport by incorporating:

1. “Setting the stage” environmental and logistical techniques to decrease the layers of physical and psychological barriers that adversely affect communication

2. Adapted facial expressions to optimize empathic non-verbal communication

3. Utilizing enhanced voice modulation and choosing words wisely to align the provider with the patient’s interests

4. Incorporating optimal body language by adapting seven evidence-based, non-verbal cues that reestablish patient comprehension, express empathy and help with building rapport

5. Re-tooling evidence-based communication practices by adopting the pneumonic “PRESENT” to improve communication "behind the masks”

Maintenance of Certification (MOC)

Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the participant to earn up to .75 Medical Knowledge MOC points in the American Board of Internal Medicine's (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. It is the CME activity provider's responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM MOC credit.

ABIM MOC points expire on June 30, 2025.
